Speech productions, especially those relevant analisi articolatoria (ArticulateAssistant) to dialectological research, are part of the general “cultural heritage”, inasmuch as they witness the gradually disappearing language diversity. They are thus in-and-by themselves worth of protection and – when needed – of restoration, just as any other cultural product of the past. In Autumn 2010, the lab got financial support from PAR FAS 2007-13, administered by Regione Toscana, for the project GRA.FO (“Grammo-foni. Le soffitte della voce”), with P.M. Bertinetto and S. Calamai (Università di Siena) as coordinators. The aim is to spot, digitize and safeguard all sorts of speech documents of linguistic interest recorded in the Tuscany territory, in order to document the diversity of its dialects.

We plan to dress a general catalogue and, to the extent possible, to transcribe these speech materials. The output will be an on-line archive accessible to the interested scholars, as well as the general public. The archive will consist of a user-friendly platform, consisting of an interactive map where locations and corresponding sound materials will be easily identified and accessed. This repository will offer the unique opportunity of reviving voices otherwise doomed to remain silent or even lost forever. It is to be hoped that this pioneering initiative will inspire more such enterprises in the Italian territory.
